OPENING OF SOCIAL HOUSING CONSTRUCTION SITES

OPENING OF SOCIAL HOUSING CONSTRUCTION SITES

On 29 April 2020, the President announced the risk adjusted strategy for the easing up of the lockdown restrictions where a five-level alert system was communicated. The country currently stands on Level Four, and we have had enquiries on what this means for social housing construction sites.

According to the alert system, the opening of the construction sector is placed on Level Two, however, if one looks at sectors allowed to re-open under Level Four, “public works civil engineering and construction works” are permitted.

Thus far, the SHRA has requested further clarity from the National Department of Human Settlements (NDoHS) on what level social housing contruction is placed on. We await this feedback from the Department and the SHRA will be able to provide clarity before the end of the week on whether social housing contruction sites can re-open.
