SHRA OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES THEMBELIHLE VILLAGE IN TSHWANE

SHRA officially launched Thembelihle Village on 17 April 2018. In attendance at the launch of the 733 unit development was the Minister for Human Settlements, Nomaindiya Mfeketo, Tshwane Mayor, Cllr Solly Msimanga, the Gauteng MEC Dikgang Moilao as well as the MMC for Human Settlement, Cllr Mandla Nkomo.

The SHRA Council and CEO are excited to have implemented an example of urban restructuring which addresses spatial dysfunctionalities designed by the apartheid regime. Thembelihle Village offers an opportunity for low and medium income earners to access affordable rental in the inner city with the added advantage of being close to economic opportunities, schools, health care, transport routes, shopping complexes and other amenities. This improves the quality of life for residents in the Village.

Yeast City Housing (YCH) has done an excellent job in developing and managing the project. This was achieved through SHRA’s Consolidated Capital Grant (CCG) and other funding from the Provincial Department of Human Settlements, National Housing Finance Corporation (NHFC) and the institution’s own equity. The total cost of the development amounts to close to 300 million.

A housing demand survey carried out in the City of Tshwane central business district and surrounding areas suggests that there is an immediate need of 18 000 and 30 000 new residential units, including affordable, social housing and that residential development needs to come with associated community/social infrastructure. Thembelihle Village is testament that the SHRA can forge more partnerships to develop more residential facilities which will bring people closer to a better quality of life.
